Nordic Living
This course is designed for our international students to welcome you into Danish life. It will be both a supportive and educational time in the week.
Together we will dive into what makes Danish society so unique. We analyse Danish history and reflect on the many traditions, rituals and cultural behaviors. We look into cultural concepts such as: trust, happiness, equality, education, family life, popular culture, social security, personal identity, nordic language, literature and music. The course will be a mix of workshops, discussions, group work. We also often leave the classroom and venture outside the school on local visits or tours. We have a lot of fun amongst the bigger concepts by learning how to pronounce danish greetings, jokes and phrases, such as the famous ‘røde grød med fløde’ and competitions making the best ‘smørrebrød’ (open sandwiches).
It will also be a great place to check in with your teacher for more practical ways to settle at the højskole and in Denmark. Together as a group we will often have an opportunity to share our own experiences of what culture means to us. We create a very respectful space where we have the opportunity to reflect on our own backgrounds and our cultural experiences. You are never expected to share anything if you do not want, but it is more an invitation to offer insight or inspiration to your fellow international students.
The course will be taught in English and is designed for international students. We have a core teacher, and then all teachers from the school will contribute to your learning and show you’re their understanding of Danish culture.
